Teaser Trailer Research
Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark
Genre: Horror/ Thriller
Features which make it this genre: Dark, Tension building music, scary voices, exagerated sound effects, demon like creatures
For the first 45 seconds of the trailer there are no images, just a black screen with a voice over. The voice is a scary wispering voice which is clearly coming from one of the bad characters in the film as it is saying 'You're sitting in the dark, but don't worry theres nothing to be afraid of'
The rest of the trailer is pretty fast moving, showing some scenes from the film to make it look scary.
This is the first thing that comes up after the black screen, It looks effective as it is flashing part of the title in this way and inside the text you can see a scene from the film. Behind this one you can see a woman who looks frightened, which suggests scary events happen in the film and get the audience interested.
In the trailer every scene we see is filmed at night time or in the dark with an artificial light as the source of light, this makes the scenes look more scary than if it was filmed in daylight and sunshine. While all the parts of the film are coming up there is a creepy background music that gets louder, faster and more intense as the trailer progresses, building up tension. Every trailer I have seen for the horror genre always has a creepy whistle like background music, this is one of its conventions.
Here shows a house shown in the scene, from the way the house and scene look you can tell that the movie is of horror genre. The scene is very dark, big black clouds are surrounding the house, the house looks like a typical old haunted house and has very yellow/ orange lighting coming from the windows. It is also misty outside.
At the end of the trailer there is also a bit where a demon jumps out to scare the audience, this is a typical find in a horror type movie.
The Hangover
Genre - Comedy
Features which make it this genre: Happy music, bright colours, funny dialogue
The opening sequence of the trailer is of a man who looks to have been beaten up on the phone in a desert type area, he is having a conversation with his fiance who explains that they are getting married in 5 hours, the man explains this isnt possible as they have lost his friend and are still away.
The scene then goes to a flash back where we see a hotel room full of weird things such as tigers and random babies, we understand that they have been out for the stag night and have done some mad things which they cannot remember.
The lighting in the trailer is bright and high contrast which shows it is meant to be a happy film as the scenes are not dull.
This is the title image for the theme, the bright colours and text style suggest that it will be a comedy film.
The film also contains slapstick violence (funny violence) supported with sound effects. For example when the men are getting into the car they open it and it hits the baby, which then starts crying so we understand what happens. Also Mike Tyson hits one of the characters while singing a song, when he hits him there is an exagerated hitting noise which makes it funny.
Attack The Block
Genre: Action/Adventure/Thriller/Sci-Fi
Features which make it this genre: Alien theme, Sci-Fi/Space music, Explosions
The sequence opens with a sci fi/ space type of music and a close up of something moving through the sky down to earth at night time. Due to the music being played and where we see the things coming from we automatically assume that they are probably some sort of aliens or something.
We then get a low angled shot showing the things in the sky and a group of what looks to be teenagers due to the type of clothing they are wearing who are looking at what is coming towards them, they seem amazed and follow it with their eyes. The scene then switches to some houses and we then see an explosion taking place inbetween the housing, this leads us to believe that what we had previously seen falling has now reached earth, this excites the audience as they want to know what it was and how it will react to humans, we can see that people have spotted it so we can guess that they will try to find it.
The lighting is very dark, it is clearly night time so all the lighting is artificial from street lamps and very scarce which makes the whole event seem more scary.
We then see a close up of a new character which is a woman on the floor, she looks quite shocked at what she is seeing and seems to be quite low on the ground, from what we see we cannot tell much about her or the other characters at this point as nobody has spoken.
By the time this has all happened it is only 8 minutes into the 1 minute trailer and we already have seen alot of events and action which makes it live up to his genre and seems exciting to the audience as many people enjoy this sort of film.
Pirates Of The Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest
